Greater Green Bay Hockey Referees Home Page

New on the Forum

Two new categories have been added to the forum. The first provides a place for you to post games that you have been assigned and need a replacement for. This category also provides a place to let people know that you are available to pick up games as well. The second is a classified area for posting items you are either looking to sell or want to buy. There is one for hockey related items and one for other items.

Forum Now Available

On the left navigation menu and on the bottom navigation you will now notice a link to the forum. Become a USA Hockey Referee

The first thing you will need to do is go to WIHOA and sign up for a level 1 seminar. In addition you will need to be registered with USA hockey as an official. This can be done at the USA Hockey website. Brad Roethlisberger will then contact you and move you from the seminar you signed up for into the Zebra Cup. The Zebra Cup takes the place of the seminar for new officials however, it is by invitation only so this is process.

Once you have completed the seminar and are registered with USA Hockey, you can return to this website and click on the Date Request link which can be found on the left navigation. Then fill out the form for the month with the times that you are available to work games. When this is submitted it will go the scheduler, Dave Mather. As games become available that that you are eligible to work you will be assigned to work that game.

If you have any questions please contact Scott Gauthier or Dave Mather.

Become a WIAA Referee

You will need to fill out a WIAA License application which you will need to have signed by a WIAA coach or Athletic Director along with a an already licensed WIAA Official. The form can be obtained at this link. (www.wiaawi.org/officials/app.pdf). Once you have that form signed and mailed in you will also have to attend a WIAA Rules Meeting, those dates have not been posted yet. When they are announced that information can be found at www.wiaawi.org.

Being registered with WIAA is the first step. As the Green Bay Scheduler Dave Mather will occasionally schedule WIAA games, but most are scheduled by Dave King and the Eastern Wisconsin Hockey Officials. These games are generally scheduled well in advance, and are assigned through contracts with the individual schools and/or conferences. To register with Eastern Wisconsin Hockey Officials go to the EWHOA registration page.

Length of Games

Both Green Bay and DePere have stated that they intend to use the entire ice time that has been reserved for their games. This means that when a team has a 6 or more goal lead the clock DOES NOT automatically go to running time. Unless the coaches tell you they want to go to running time (after 6 goals) the game will continue as a stop time game. Having said that, both associations also stated that their games WILL END ON TIME. The reason for this concern is that with the new standards of play, more penalties are being called which can cause the game to run long. To eliminate that problem both teams have requested that at the start of the third period you (THE REFEREE) look at the rink clock and determine how much time is remaining before the end of the scheduled ice time. You should then set the game clock to two minutes less than the ice time allotted. This two-minute margin should be a sufficient cushion to allow for the actual drop of the puck, incidental stoppages, and time to clear the ice of players/pucks prior to the Zamboni hitting the ice.
